The Employee Workplace Campaign is part of a community-wide effort to support the work of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. Specifically, local businesses and organizations — from small-business mom/pop shops to the largest employers in Buncombe County — participate by opening their doors and allowing us to both educate their employees and provide them with opportunities to support the collaborative work we're doing in the community. 

It is a time when business leaders take on the challenge of raising awareness, dollars, and volunteers needed to elevate student success, support families, and engage communities throughout Buncombe County. In short, workplace campaigns serve as a mechanism for employees to engage, and make positive change, in the communities where they work, live, and raise children.

Each workplace participates in the Live United fundraising campaign differently, from simply writing checks to hosting golf tournaments or throwing elaborate theme-based employee events. Throughout the campaign, organizations and businesses find creative and fun ways of getting involved and shaping our community for the better.

Best Practices for Engaging Your Workplace

Ready to get started but aren't sure you can pull it off? We can and will help! Below are a few core strategies to make your Workplace Campaign the envy of other organizations. You'll be assigned a United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County representative to help you formulate and carry out your strategy. 

Recruit a Team

Don't run your campaign alone. Recruit a committee of enthusiastic, resourceful, and committed employees to help you plan the best possible campaign. Things to consider...

  • Involve representatives from various departments in your organization. Diversity is important, so invite individuals from groups such as marketing, human resources, accounting, and more.
  • Set up regular committee meetings and delegate responsibilities. You can ensure campaign success by creating roles such as department liaison and payroll contact, and areas of focus such as marketing/events and campaign communications, for committee members. 

Lock Down the Logistics

It's all about timing — take it from us.

The most effective campaigns have proven to be short and sweet, so design yours with that in mind. Kick it off and wrap it up within 2 weeks. 

  • Plan ahead. It's important to launch the campaign with a clear kickoff and wrap it up ceremoniously. These are key elements to take into consideration when establishing timing upfront. 
  • Set goals. United Way will help you determine the numbers. Once they are set, make sure your colleagues know what they're working toward. 

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate

Campaigns with great visibility encourage everyone to get involved. Here are a few ways to mix your communications up and get them the visibility they deserve.

  • Employ regular, consistent communication. Launch your campaign with creative kickoff communications — then, communicate along the way to maintain excitement and engagement.
  • Use a mixed media approach. Email, your intranet, personalized letters, and United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County's website are all valuable elements you can use to promote your campaign. Hang posters and flyers in prominent places like lobbies, kitchens/lounges, and elevators to announce United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County campaign dates and important information.

While running a Workplace Campaign can seem overwhelming, in actuality, it's anything but. The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone. United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County staff will be right there with you every step of the way — guiding and providing you with the resources you need to be successful. Thank you for agreeing to be a part of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County's Live United fundraising campaign. You are an important part of this team — your efforts directly impact the quality and accomplishments of your company's total financial contribution and ultimately our ability to co-create a united and resilient community where everyone belongs and everyone thrives. 

Please remember, you are not alone. We will assign a United Way representative to your company. This person is your rock, your support throughout the campaign. Call on your representative to strategize and help implement your campaign plan.
